Chapter Ten

Two weeks later, I hadn't heard anything from Ainsley and my text, asking if she was okay, went unanswered. Ciara and I remained as we were. There was no doubt in my mind that my feelings for her grew with each hour we spent together. My worry wasn't about developing deeper feelings for her, it was more I worried that once I completely let myself fall for her, Ainsley would reappear and throw a curveball into the mix. She was good at that, and I was beginning to resent it. It wasn't the first time she'd gone weeks without talking to me. She'd always resurfaced, and now I feared that she would.

"And to think, you were worried that Bentley would take me away from you and here I am, the lonely one." Angelina pouted at me while we sat in the conference room waiting for Walsh and the team. Sorensen and Tyler both scoffed at the same time when they heard us.

"You two are pathetic," Tyler said.

"Aw, C'mon Ty. Don't envy their love. We can have the same broship if we want." Sorensen tossed his arm around Tyler's neck and squeezed.

"Asshole." Tyler punched him in the side and they shared a laugh.

Walsh approached, handing each of us a file. "Read it. Close the case. Move on. That's the brief of the day."

"Sir, you're very grumpy lately," I said, smirking at him.

"Stiles!" Walsh shouted as soon as he entered the room.

"Yessir?" Stiles smirked, obviously not taking him seriously.

"See that one?" He pointed at me. "She's yours. Get control of her like you did James."

"I respectfully decline, Sir. I'm already burnt out on my James control abilities, Sir." Style saluted him but Walsh just snarled.

"Do it anyway. She's annoying me."

"Hey." I frowned at the two of them. "Who's this James person? And I don't need to be controlled."

"A damn fine detective but the loudest mouth I ever met." Walsh narrowed his gaze at me. "You, Grant, lack the former of the comparison."

"Hey!" I dropped the report down on the table when everyone erupted with laughter. "I hate you all."

Stiles looked at me, glanced to Moreno, then laughed again. "Grant, let's go."

"C'mon...Why me?"

"Because if we don't leave, he'll just keep going on and on." Stiles nodded for me to follow him.

"Fine." I stood up, glaring at Angelina who tried to hide her laughter by pulling her sweater over her mouth. "Jerks." I smacked Sorensen upside the head with the case file before following Stiles out.

We climbed into his SUV and I quieted. Pairing me up with a senior detective was surely a way to shut me up and Walsh knew it. I sighed when I saw Ainsley's name on both reports in my hands. So she wasn't dead after all. "So who's this James person Walsh keeps comparing me to? Did you work with him?"

"She was my former partner when I worked cold cases."

"Oh." I paused, remembering the stories of his old partner. "Oh…"

"Yep." He kept his gaze on the road, a smirk tugging the corner of his mouth.
